Fried Chicken with my Sweetie

My girlfriend and I recently went to Carolina Kitchen in Hyattsville, MD, as I hoped it would have the flavor of home I longed for – NC barbecue. It didn’t. I was disappointed. It did have sweet iced tea, though, which was nice, seeing as how it is lodged securely in a land of yankees, many of whom likely would not know sweet tea if it bit them in the butt.
What I got instead was some delicious fried chicken. This did not disappoint me in the least. Magical things happen around this woman. First, she was the purveyor of pork and then present when I rediscovered the beauty of fried chicken. I better keep her – who knows what could be next? Wine from water? Real NC barbecue north of the border? maybe I should go back to Miracle-Making Mary and consult her on what could be next.
In the end, I think this restaurant is pretty much like Applebee’s or TGI Friday’s in terms of its general feel and decor, but there are a few bits on the menu that are worth going there for. The chicken pretty much rocked, as did the macaroni and cheese. The collards, not so much. They have some work to do here to improve soul food before exposing it to the masses like this, but it was a valiant attempt.
