Monday Funday: Earthworms in Slim Jims?
October 31, 2011 § 2 Comments
I guess this doubles as the Halloween edition because people are searching for something truly frightful. I guess there is a rumor that Slim Jims contain worms. It reminds me of when I was a kid in the 1970s and everyone thought McDonald’s burgers were made from worms, kangaroo meat, and various other non-traditional meats.
It’s all false. In truth, a certain amount of insect parts is allowed by law in any sort of food product, but it is a very small amount, and a byproduct of almost any manufacturing process. I think the earthworms in Slim Jims can safely be ruled out and dismissed as a myth, but the beef rectums? There’s no telling there. You might be eating beef rectums. It just says beef on the label and the manufacturer did not return calls from Wired when they did a story on what’s in a Slim Jim and asked what cut of meat is in the delicious snack.
So who knows – maybe the beef rectum is what gives it that spicy kick.
